Yes, indeed, for general user it is so. But IMHO, every administrator (and maybe even developer) should run the same systems on hiss server and workstation. At first it makes testing easier (you shouldn't bring up a virtual computer to test some minor change in configuration). Secondly, you become more familiar with your basic OS (many actions become automatic, and you shouldn't remember, how is the service enabled in this OS, and where are my logs... So, I run FreeBSD on my workstation (and it is a suitable desktop OS), Linux on my notebook (which is used to write Java programs, IMHO it's the best platform for Java Development), and OpenSolaris on my home computer (it is also a suitable desktop, however, likes memory too much and have problems with available free software). And after recent disaster (Windows worm successfully stole several ftp passwords from my colleague's Vista workstation) I feel that avoiding using Windows on desktop is a necessary decision for a system administrator... :) -- This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
