I generally agree with Erik's response, but have 2 comments: 1) While trying to support all home hardware is hopeless, providing good support for a small number of standard laptops is probably worth doing. The big problem at the moment is that you can't tell what works and what doesn't without trying it, and almost everything that is documented as working is too old to buy.
2) I agree about the importance of universities (since I work at one). Oracle is doing almost everything possible to throw away that market. I'm about as hardcore a Solaris fan as you're going to find.
