Well if you would open your eyes, you can see even with Linux the old "UNIX culture" is giving way to NEW UNIX users that would rather find an alternative to Windows etc.
One thing they might not want to do right away is to learn to compile code. It is kind of a scary transition. Believe me I started 12 years ago with Slackware but I was a little more adventurous than some maybe not as much as others but it was a something to wonder and think about. Now if I had people that gave me help by saying "If you are using UNIX you should be able to roll your own." I probably would have felt a bit pissed even if you gave me an idea to find a solution because you are being presumptuous about me and my situation and from that statement alone I could judge and the entire community.
