Actually, I think Mozilla is an example of a project where the original vendor (AOL) planned to release a partly-closed-source product of which they retained control as the "full" version, with Mozilla being a potentially cut down free version. For example, the spell checker was originally a closed binary, and possibly part of mail as well. And with most of the developers initially at Netscape.
Obviously it didn't work out that way because AOL lost interest and the development moved fully outside.
Back to OpenSolaris -- Alan is correct that while 95+% of the work is inside Oracle, Oracle doesn't really need the community to produce Solaris and is therefore not likely to give up control.
