As I've noted previously on the ZFS-discuss list, my primary
recommendation for mid-range home-use servers is used name-brand
hardware.

I'd look at IBM-labeled stuff, as it tends to be very feature-complete
and quite compatible with Solaris/OSol. Dell stuff is OK, but Dell's
tendency to use strange NICs isn't the best. I have no experience with
HP equipment, and Sun equipment still is expensive (even used) vs IBM
stuff.

I like the IBM x3400 and x3500 pedestal servers (which, while they have
lots of PCI-E slots, only have x8, so no big graphics cards), or the IBM
A- or M-series Intellistation. In any case, the IBM xRef page is a good
place to start for comparing specs. You should be able to get yourself
a really nice box for $500 or so, used.

If you can find one cheap enough, the Sun Ultra 20 M2 is ideal for you.

If you want to re-use your existing kit, and just replace the
motherboard, I'd look at either single-socket AMD Opterons, or
AM2/AM3-based motherboards. Ideally, you'd want an Athlon II or Phenom
II, but an older Athlon64 X2 is find, too. If they've got 4 DIMM
sockets, they'll support 8GB or more of RAM. Get the AMD systems, since
you *REALLY* should use ECC RAM in your system, which all AMD systems
support, but only Intel Xeon-based ones will.
