Thanks to everyone who replied. I have successfully switch over to OpenSolaris without much problem. System response seems to be much better than SXCE.
The IPS, although it is very convenient, has some packages whose names are confusing. For instance, there are so many difference netbeans pkgs, and there is no telling which would include all the packages I need. Also, the description is very brief (I am using the update manager).
