Howdy,

I am really glad to hear you are exploring Solaris and trying to learn it.
Honestly, once you give it a chance I think you will really like it. It is
definitely not Windows, so there is going to be a learning curve - but if you
stick with it you will likely gain a lot of knowledge. You are taking a Java
class and using Eclipse, so if your interested in software development,
learning Solaris can really only help.

As for Eclipse - the version in the package manager is a previous one. I would
recommend just downloading the last Solaris build from the Eclipse site - make
sure you get the x86 version:

http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.5.1-200909170800/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.5.1-solaris-gtk-x86.zip

Just download it, unzip it, and run the eclipse program (which is a java app)
inside it and it should start right up.

You mentioned you were getting an error when you tried to download Eclipse, if
that happens again please just give the specific details of what it says, etc.

To answer your other questions:

SUNWgnome - that is a package that installs the Gnome Desktop Environment,
which you already have.

IPS - the packaging system, is how software is installed in OpenSolaris. It is
actually very cool, though I am sorry to hear it did not work for installing
Eclipse for you. The general idea is you can use command to install a package,
which is also then install anything else that it depends on - downloading it
from online software repositories. (This is how Linux installs software too.) I
can assure you, once you get used to this method of installing software there
is no going back.

If you have any other questions, just ask and I am sure you will find guys are
more than happy to help.

Cheers,
VegaBlue
