Hey there, I think a question of your may have been missed earlier too - how to move the Eclipse executable. You can make a "shortcut" to in similar to in windows and place it on your desktop, but an easier approach may be to add to your menu in Gnome. Here is a guide on how to do so in Gnome. (It's shows doing it in Ubuntu, but Gnome will work the same in Solaris in this regard, so no worries.) I just add Eclipse to my "Programming" menu and its all good.
Also, you might want to think about either dual booting (as recommended above) or - another super easy option - install Ubuntu inside Virtual Box. Then you can run Solaris on your notebook and also - simultaneously - run Ubuntu and flip back and forth. Ubuntu really is an awesome platform to learn on and you can translate 90% of what you learn right over to Solaris. Well, maybe 80% :) Most of all - have fun!
