Guess what? You'll never guess. Give up? Give up now?
After yanking and disabling everything I could - I tacked on in grub: -v -kd -B acpi-user-options=0x4 And the system came booted up, and had a nice clean panic that tossed me right back into the kernel debugger. Right before the panic are the remains of some kernel guts going on and on about my ATAPI CD-ROM, a 48x IDE CDROM player that I pulled out of an old system just to get this install done. Could it be? I downloaded Hiroshi's OpenSolaris Live USB creator for windows, and the .USB image for 0906 (from genunix.org). I disabled the IDE port on my mobo in BIOS, ready for yet another crushing defeat. Egemehaw? It works! Opensolaris installed super happy and without any trouble from the USB key. Now I'm going to party like it's 1999 and I've got a Y2K BIOS bug. Hope this might help out anyone else installing OpenSolaris on a Tyan S2937, S2937WG2NR or S2937G2NR. I should probably go add this to the HCL before I start my party.
