svcs -xv will tell you any services that didn't start, and give you pointers to the log files and web URLs to provide some additional explanation to the error code. The information you get may not be too helpful, but it varies. If you get nothing when you type the command, then everything started successfully (or so the system says).
What, if anything, did you remove that was there when you did the install? if the LiveCD gnome session started, why not now...? Did you try enabling anything like LDAP, NIS, xxxx? Just brainstorming. Since your networking isn't functional, it makes me wonder if something is waiting to timeout, even if you didn't enable anything extra.
