I've just installed OpenSolaris on my PC, this is the first time that I've tried any other operating system (properly) outside of Windows - and so this whole experience seems foreign, confusing and scary to me.
Anyways, I'm slowly stumbling my way through things, and I've hit a few snags that I was hoping someone here would be kind enough to help me with. 1. When oSolaris installed, it installed Firefox 3.1 beta 3. I went to upgrade, but failing to spot the Fx updater in Fx itself, I went to the Firefox site and downloaded the latest version from there, unfortunately, I couldn't get the downloaded file to install (read: absolute noob), so I googled, and found that it was best to install through the package manager. I found the file in the package manager, and it went to update, creating a new boot environment in the process, but when I launched Firefox, it was still 3.1b3, and not 3.5 - so I failed, there. My first question: how do I install apps that I download off of web (like Firefox off of the Firefox site). second: why didn't it work when I updated via the package manager. 2. I tried updating Firefox numerous times, creating 2 different boot environments at the same time, I wanted to remove them (as the Fx updates didn't work, anyway), the openSolaris help file told me to go to File -> Boot Environment Manager (or something along those lines)... but, alas, I couldn't even find File! (Well, there was a "File" in the help window itself, but this was just related to the help application). Not giving up, I hit Google, where I discovered command "ludelete", I tried typing # ludelete opensolaris-1 but I got no response. I then went to try it without the #, to which I got the response: bash: ludelete: command not found, I tried a few other things like /usr/sbin/ludelete opensolaris-1 but that also through errors. third: where is this "File" that the help was alluding to? fourth: how do I delete unwanted boot environments? fifth: (probably a bit advanced for me, atm) why did terminal not respond to my whims? 3. Finally, I've installed OpenSolaris onto a partition, keeping my Windows installation on another one. sixth: is there a way for me to access files on my Win partition (music files, and the like) through OpenSolaris? I'm sorry for all these questions, and I'm guessing that they're rather common/ you're'll sick of answering these questions, but I'm getting quite frustrated with all this. I feel like I'm trying to find a train station in France. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
