I am using an opensolaris box exclusively as a desktop machine with two 24'
monitors and a large storage pool configured as raidz1 which is built of
several SATA drives of identical size and model. Most of the time the machine
is on and in Gnome or Windows XP VirtualBOX - full screen. I want to avoid
configuring email on the machine. I know that disk failures would be reported
to /var/adm/messages. The problem is I want to forget about those logs. :) I
have enough servers to monitor at work to worry about my desktop machine in the
same way. Should one of the drives in the zpool fail I want the system to pop
the big "red flag" on top of everything (Gnome/VBox/etc) and warn me before the
second drive dies and I lose my dear MP3s. Where shall I look for a solution?
Google is annoyed with my "opensolaris hardware monitoring" requests - no
relevant result so far.
