Well, why did I think it was due to the missing network... The slow down was caused by something else. I had incidentally swapped out the DVD drive from the bay and replaced it with the optional 2nd battery module.
After some systematic experimentation I can now confirm that the system temporarily hangs at certain times only if the optional battery is in the drive bay. It works fine when the drive bay is empty or when it contains the DVD drive. The temporary hangs are not the only problem. Also the X11 server does not want to start with the battery installed. That can be overcome through an explicit "svcadm restart gdm", though. Strange, isn't it? It's a bit unfortunate for me as the internal battery of this laptop is pretty weak and I would prefer if I could run with the 2nd battery installed. I'm also cross posting to the laptops list, in case someone reading that list has an idea. The hardware is a Dell Precision M65. -- Regards, Georg. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
