Well, why did I think it was due to the missing network...

The slow down was caused by something else.  I had incidentally swapped out the 
DVD drive from
the bay and replaced it with the optional 2nd battery module.

After some systematic experimentation I can now confirm that the system 
temporarily hangs
at certain times only if the optional battery is in the drive bay.  It works 
fine when the drive bay
is empty or when it contains the DVD drive.

The temporary hangs are not the only problem.  Also the X11 server does not 
want to start with
the battery installed.  That can be overcome through an explicit "svcadm 
restart gdm", though.

Strange, isn't it?

It's a bit unfortunate for me as the internal battery of this laptop is pretty 
weak and I would
prefer if I could run with the 2nd battery installed.

I'm also cross posting to the laptops list, in case someone reading that list 
has an idea.

The hardware is a Dell Precision M65.
