Back when I helped with Windows systems I kept typing 'ls' to get a directory listing. To my great pleasure I have nothing to do with that crapware now. But the remount is not at all necessary. The /etc/shadow file has perms 200 and even though vi complains about it being read-only, root can still edit it without adding the write bit. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
