HP LaserJet 5P
BW laser printer, max. 600x600 dpi, works Perfectly

Unfortunately the printer supports no ethernet and no USB.

1. LocalTalk cable and connectors.
2. IEEE-1284 parallel cable and large (B-type) printer connector.
3. IEEE-1284 parallel cable and small (C-type) printer connector.

 Interface Connections
HP LaserJet 5P/5MP, printer supports the following
interfaces

Two IEEE-1284 compliant parallel ports at the back of the
printer one large B-type and one small C-type.
One LocalTalk port at the back of the printer.
One IrDA-compliant infrared port at the front of the printer.

Problem:
My workstation has USB and I have added extra LAN Network Interface cards.

I can see two possible workarounds.

1) purchase a print server parallel // ethernet
==>  which print server ?

2) purchase an ethernet or USB printer which connects to my PC.
==> which printer works best on a Sun Ultra 40 with opensolaris?

what is better USB or Ethernet, or an external printserver ?

I'm looking for a reliable solution with a 100$ laserprinter or a printserver
or both.
I have sun hardware without parallel port and of course opensolaris.
There must be a solution which simply works for Linux, BSD and Solaris.

The easiest way I think would be to purchase a new printer,
problem is like with USB or firewire scanners,
Windows driver and mac drivers are with every canon USB scanner and every
50 $ deskjet has windows and mac drivers. 32 and 64 bit. period.

Nothing for the desktop user who wants the gear up and running on opensolaris.

How Do I select a printer which works on a sun ultra 40 and which runs open
solaris?

will a simple parallel to USB adapter work?
for scanners and printers?

If I want to be sure and purchase a new USB or LAN printer,
will any USB or ethernet printer listed from openprinting.org
also work on all operating systems, Included BSD Linux and opensolaris?

if PCL6, PostScript3 and CUPS is supported by the printer manufacturer,
and if the plug fits into my hardware it should happen to print?
