What graphics card are you using?   (For instance, what is the output from
"pfexec scanpci" for that card.)

Yes - Xorg is not just the default, it's the only choice.
As for why it didn't work, you haven't given us enough information to
say - try attaching your /var/log/Xorg.0.log made when using that xorg.conf
file to see what errors it gave.

Is your hardware supported by that driver?   Did you reboot after installing it?
