I did not try to put the drive's back into ide mode, but I did try the SUNWhd package from the x4500 and the sata drive's spill out their smart data with that utility. The pata drive also connected to that system is not replying to any query at the moment.
The thing I would have liked to do with the smartmontools package was to turn the self monitoring of the drive's and to selftest them once in a while.
