Is the problem Grub not displaying properly, or is the kernel serial output not getting redirected?
I have a new X4540 on which console redirection is not yet working. I had the same problem with some X4500-somethings (1U AMD servers) some time ago. I could not get the proper kernel parameters to redirect kernel serial output after Grub handed off to the kernel. I never did get it working. I hope I don't have to settle for broken console redirection on the 4540 as well. I'll followup if I find a solution.
