This sounds more like an issue with Dell than dual booting. Their
support back then was - to be kind - miserable. IIRC, their support
contract was voided if you installed *any* third party software on the
machine. They claim to have improved since then, but I got burned
sufficiently badly that, even though their hardware is ok, I won't
touch it if it comes with their support.
I've never had trouble getting support for hardware running
alternative OS's. Then again, if I buy a computer running Windows,
it's going to gift wrapped and given away.
