---I can ping the opensolaris ip from windows, but not the hostname. If I understand your description:
so lets say there are two machines: Arthur and Fred Im at the Arthur console. # ping Fred ping: unknown host Fred Waht happened here? well, Arthur checked its "hosts" file either in /etc or the windows OS dir if there was not an entry for Fred ie. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Fred then, Arthur checks for a DNS server and asks it to translate the name "Fred" to and address "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" listed in its A-list ( kinda the same as a hosts file) ALL, names must be translated to numbers, each and everytime you make a request for connection otherwise no go Fred cannot tell Arthur anything spontaneously, ie Fred cannot "respond" to a name request by itself SGK This message posted from opensolaris.org
