If the disk is unusable at present I supose you can run a destructive disk test on it using the DISK vendors tools. Seagate have
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/ which is a "live CD " that boots to DOS and runs tests on the diskdrives. the P5KR seems to have SATA ports directly on the southbridge, and on an additional JMicron device.
