Blake, Thank you _so much_ for your response! I flashed my BIOS with the latest beta version (1011-003; using FreeDOS CD to run the AWDFLASH.EXE v1.16 utility) and everything just began to work, even X11, which I expected to need to further fiddle with after I get the text mode working.
