PS  just for giggles, since I had a DNS server running to handle reverse lookup
for localhost, and do some DNS caching for me, I added zones for forward and
reverse lookup for the *.local stuff, so that regular DNS (internally) would 
find the
same host names as mDNS would.  (I also have IPv6 running locally, although it's
turned off on the Mac 'cause IPv6 routes can occasionally crash the Mac.  IPv6
reverse lookup in DNS is bigtime ugly...)
