Release 5.11 version snv_111b. A couple of days ago I thought my hard disk had failed because booting hung every time at the same point, even when I left it for an hour, but having run the manufacturer's surface test and (after 4 hours) and found no problems at all, I decided to give it another go. Part of my rationale was that while it was hung, there was light random disk activity, and I thought that if it was a bad sector being retried indefinitely, the activity would be regular. So reinserted the disk, started the machine, and left it while I had a meal and watched a DVD. When I came back 3 hours later, it had booted successfully and was at the login prompt. That was two days ago. I rebooted it again 50 minutes ago and it's still booting. My plan is to go out somewhere this afternoon, as I have something that vaguely resembles a life, and I expect it will have completed booting by the time I get back. This cannot be normal. Long boot that is, not going out.
I've seen people complaining about 5-minute boot times. Luxury! I'd be happy with an hour. The disk is a 1TB Seagate. When the system was up I ZFS scrubbed it, and it confirmed that there are no errors. The reboot was normal, so all processes should have shut down cleanly, flushed caches, and generally played nicely. Does anybody out there have any knowledge about this issue that could help me find out what the problem is? It's not much to ask, a boot time less than an hour.
