Try following the instructions at this link: http://blogs.sun.com/observatory/entry/boot_into_single_user_mode
to edit the $kernel line in the GRUB menu but with one difference. Where, in the instructions at the blogs.sun.com link where they added this parameter to the $kernel line: -s try adding these options instead: -skv You probably want to get rid of that retarded "happy face boot" thing so that you can actually read the text messages from the kernel while it boots up instead of watching an orange bar move back and forth across the screen (which isn't very helpful). If you have problems, post the lines of text that you see after you hit the "e" key to edit GRUB here in this forum and I'll tell you what you need to do to get a nice text mode boot that drops you in to a kernel debugger when the boot runs in to problems.
