For what it's worth,

I took a SpaceBall 5000 (serial port version) and attached it to my
Laptop. My Laptop has no serial port, so I used a serial port to usb
adapter. To install the driver I had to copy the files into the
appropriate files to their correct locations manually. After this I
issued the command (please note, the serial port to usb adapter shows up
as a serial port!):

# /etc/3DxWare/daemon/3dxsrv -d /dev/term/0
3DxWareUNIX = V1.4.0
Device      = Spaceball 4000
Firmware    = V2.45

OK, it started, just showing the incorrect SpaceBall version.

Next I started up Pro-Engineer Wildfire 5 and opened a 3D model. The
SpaceBall worked.

So at least the driver does work with Opensolaris b131 (X86), with a
serial port SpaceBall 5000 and a serial port to USB adapter and
Pro-Engineer Wildfire 5.
