> how do i find out the kernel release?

A Solaris Express based OpenSolaris release would print something like this
when the kernel starts:

SunOS Release 5.10 Version snv_22 32-bit
....

> anyway, setting 'pci_bios_nbus/W' to 9 did not work.
> any other ideas?

Bug 6283818?

    http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6283818

Again, this bug is fixed in snv_22, so if your OpenSolaris LiveCD
uses an older kernel you may run into this bug. For 6283818 the
workarounds are to make sure that ACPI is enabled, or boot with
ACPI completely disabled ("-B acpi-user-options=2" -- for the installation
CD append ",acpi-user-options=2" to the -B option value).
