That seems to be exactly the same problem that has already been
filed as bug 6324235:

Unfortunatelly the ata driver source is not available with opensolaris,
so it's difficult to find out what is going wrong here.
I tried to run format on my snv_25 test box (bfu'ed to snv_26), selected the
IDE disk, but there was no error, it works as expected.
