Oops, I thought I had searched the bug database as well as the forums, but 
obviously not.  I eventually scrubbed the Solaris installation*, and upon 
reinstallation with the same disk layout, everything went fine, and I can run 
format again.   I suspect that the problem was some corrupted disk geometry in 
the  partition table or disk label, which made format ask the drive for 
something weird... it would be nice if it hadn't cause a kernel panic though. 
:-)

[* I scrubbed the Solaris installation by booting under Knoppix, DDing zeros 
all across the Solaris partition to check once again that the actual disk 
seemed alright, and then deleting the partition altogether using fdisk]
