Just as an extra data point, I'm using the e1000g driver (5.0.5) and b36 with a
dual-port Intel Pro 1000 MT and it works very well. Since I added this NIC to
the box many weeks after first installing, I initially had the same eeprom
checksum error. The eeprom checksum error was caused by a misconfiguration I
had made.

Ensure your /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname.<interface> files
are setup properly and that you aren't trying to assign the same IP to one NIC
like I had. ;)

As for ZFS, super-cool by the way, you might wish to start by watching the
'basics' demo at http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/demos/ or
otherwise view the documentation there. Additionally, there are some great
presentations available for download at
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/os-presentations/
