Subject: Re: [osol-help] Problems installing Solaris 10 from bootable ISO
DVD

Dear Sirs,
I have created a bootable iso DVD disk using Nero and it boots into a
Caldera DR-DOS program on my Toshiba A-65. I reinstalled Windows leaving
half the disk open for Solaris, intending to have a dual boot option
which I have done before successfully with Fedora 8 using their install
disk. The error messages are: EMM 386 Warning adress in A20 already
enabled. And: EMM 386: Cannot find an unused 64 kilobyte range of upper
memory to use for an EMS page frame.
Using FRAME = NONE FRAME= NONE
Anybody out there dual booting Solaris with Windows on a Toshiba laptop?
Is there some code or command I need to enter in DOS to get the install
to start? Your attention to this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Hi.
I have a Tecra M5 notebook system, which is triple booting Windows XP,
Solaris Nevada build 48, and Fedora Core 5. Previously, I had a Tecra
M2 which was running Windows XP, Solaris 10 GA, and Fedora Core 5.
The tricks that I have found are to install Windows and then shrink the
partition that it uses, perhaps using Partition Commander or some such.
Then, install Solaris by booting the DVD image. Solaris will update
the MBR to point at a grub boot and this will allow the multiple booting.
So, I know that this can be done using Toshiba notebooks, but I don't
know explicitly about the Satellite A65. I'd probably suggest starting
with the latest available, at least build 48 of Nevada.
Thanx...
ps
Thanks for all the helpful advice so far . I was finally able to get Solaris
10 installed dual-booting with XP on my Toshiba A-65 using a combination of
advice from this forum, the Solaris for X86 notebooks at Open Solaris.org
page and the the guy at terabyteunlimitedwho suggested that I download
burncdcc at their website to render the .iso files that I had been putting
on my bootable CD's readable to the CD drive. I had to temporarily turn off
the level2 processor cache in BIOS to stop the read errors during
installation as well. The Java Desktop System is even nicer than I thought
it would be. Now my problem is how to create a viable user account.
Apparently, due to my inexperience and some confusing dialog on the set-up
options I can only log in as "root". Workstation name is "unknown". The
log-in screen says "Welcome to
unknown " , and I think I inadvertently chose the option that makes the
bootloader want to boot up on a network. I can still log in standalone but
it takes a long time to get the log in screen. I've been searching like mad
to find the options area where I can change all this and the Solaris
Management Console in the Common Desktop Environment looks like the right
place but haven't had any luck changing anything there yet either. Also I
could't get the console to start up the last few times I tried to open it.
Maybe it doesn't open if you are offline? The only hardware problem noted so
far is no sound. The Windows device lists Realtek AC97 Audio as the audio
device for this machine. I may have to break down and buy a book or
something. Is there a Solaris for Dummies book out there? I just hope I
don't have to re-install the OS to get those configuration changes right.
Also I declined to set up Kerberos on install, not knowing anything about
it. Would this be a factor?
Thanks
Bruce
