An update on my experiences with this hardware...
Learned of an "IDR" to fix S10U3 (11/06) from hanging when probing the PCI-e
space. To use it you need to get a copy from Sun (support), and build a new
distribution media DVD with the miniroot rebuilt with the IDR. (An IDR is
"Interim Diagnostics/Relief", a bit of test code that comes with no warranty
or obligation to provide to anyone as an experimental patch for a specific
problem). So S10U3 can be installed on the MB.
Both S10U3 and S11 still hang when using the Tyan-provided DVD-rom on the
motherboard's primary IDE interface. To install, use a USB-cabled external
DVD-rom drive; the BIOS can boot from it and Solaris can mount it. No fix
known for that.
The onboard SATA controller (part of the Broadcom HT-1000/HT-2000 server
chipset) can be used only in PATA emulation mode. I've decided to use a
Supermicro SAT2-MV8 8-port Marvell 88sx PCI-X controller, and completely
disable the onboard one. This controller works well with S10 and S11,
and has BIOS support for booting from connected drives.
The onboard Broadcom ethernet can not yet be driven with the Sun-provided
"bge" driver (pci ID pci14e4,166a). The Solaris driver "bcme" from Broadcom
does know about this ethernet core, but doesn't have a fully implemented
DDI API to link with the STREAMS DLPI v2 stack. Since I am not using trunking
it is not an issue.
So, right now the server is up with S10U3, 4x250Gb and 1x500Gb Seagate
SATA-II drives providing storage in two ZFS pools, one a 3-way raidz
(3x250Gb) and one a single drive (1x500Gb):

Serial console works fine (including Bios redirection).
I'm happy so far.

[BTW ZFS is cool; took the 3x250Gb array off another host with "zfs export",
and imported/updated it on the new host in a few seconds -- it was up
and running with no other fiddling]
