Can I ask why you're not using Sun's Studio compiler? It's (usually)
much better than gcc. But if you must, for some reason, use gcc, I'd
say go the blastwave.org route. Among other things, their stuff is
more properly packaged, installing into /opt rather than /usr/local.

There's no easy way to tell for sure, unless you did the install
yourself and selected it. That said, there's a list of packages
that can be fairly useful at indicating this, which escapes the
top of my head. But you can find the list in my book, Solaris
Systems Programming (www.rite-group.com/rich/ssp). :-)
