Different OpenSolaris distributions have different upgrade methods so it 
depends on what you've installed. For example, Nexenta or Solaris Express. Both 
are OpenSolaris.

If you've got Sun Update Manager, I'll assume you've installed Solaris Express 
Community Release. I would follow the advice in that thread you linked to and 
avoid BFU unless you're a developer. See the link below with more information 
on BFU. You can install a later build in the same way you installed build 54, 
but in the installer, choose upgrade instead of initial install. Or you can use 
Live Upgrade. Google for "Solaris Live Upgrade" and you should fine a ton of 
information. To use Live Upgrade you need to have a spare partition big enough 
to install onto. I use Live Upgrade with SXCR and despite a few problems with 
ZFS filesystems, it works pretty well.
