This will show if the hang is occurring during the PCI configuration phase. 
At the GRUB menu:
* type 'e' twice
* add -kvd to the kernel$ line
* type ESC
* type 'b'
At the debugger prompt type:
pci_autoconfig`pci_boot_debug/W 1
:c
