I am not using RIP or any other routing protocol on the network. As far as
most systems are concerned, there is a single gateway so routing protocols
would be overkill . I am also not sure if our router has ICMP (?) gateway
advertising enabled. It is not something I would have chosen to enable.

I did enable routing, removed the /etc/defaultrouter file and rebooted.

# svcadm enable svc:/network/routing/route:default
# svcs -a | grep route

online 13:24:42 svc:/network/routing/route:default

This release of opensolaris had not included the broadcom ethernet drivers, so
I downloaded and installed separately. I think I initially had it set via DHCP
and then used the GUI tool to set static. I notice the dhcpagent is still
running- is that relevant?

# ps -ef | grep dhcp
    root 2568 882 0 14:08:49 pts/1 0:00 grep dhcp
    root 382 1 0 13:28:27 ? 0:00 /sbin/dhcpagent
