Well, I went ahead and did a reinstall of SXDE 1/08. I used fdisk from the installer DVD to create a Solaris2 partition on the 3rd partition of my single hard drive then went back to the installer.
The installer runs through fine, but on reboot it just comes up with the 'GRUB ' sitting at the top of the screen and does nothing. Seems like grub is not finding what it wants on the solaris partition. Bummer. So much for using SXDE. :-( I again used 'dd' from an Ubuntu CD to copy my save ubuntu MBR back and get my working Ubuntu back. Maybe I'll try SXCE to see if it behaves any differently.
