Jay_m, ok good job on the connection research. I also have not set up PPP since '94 or '95 so,I would also suggest checking your service providers website for the point-to-point protocol settings if you have any trouble.
my guess is they still use PPP so that the "back end" at the provider can be serviced using the same or similar mechanisms as all the dial in customers. PPP is a 'hang over' from the the good ole days, just be glad you dont have to dial the phone by putting your phone into little holes and then setting the handset down in the foam cups.
