Thanks! I did indeed have a pleasant surprise over the weekend when I found time to do the install. There are so many pages out there with people asking about ZFS boot & root partitions and/or saying it's not possible that I completely missed that it's now a non-issue.
Thanks for the info about /etc/zfs/zpool.cache as well. I've only got 4 SATA connections on the current machine though so I'm still tempted not to mirror the root partition and use the remaining 3 SATA connections to set up a RAIDZ pool.
