If that doesn't get things running again, kill the x-windows session - the
process is called gnome-session.  This effictively logs you out and should
get you the login prompt again.  Don't reboot the system untill you've tried
everything.

Another sugestion (besides using -o to redirect output to a file) is to
truss the GUI related processes by means of a remote login.  That way the
truss itself does not depend on the GUI functionality.
