I just got off the phone with Sun here in Australia - was shopping after an OpenSolaris software subscription and was unable to complete the quote/transaction online. I asked whether I was wasting my time buying support for OpenSolaris and whether it would be continued...his exact answer was "Solaris is definitely being continued. OpenSolaris should be supported for a while however I am not sure". Those were his exact words. I asked him to explain what he meant however he politely declined and said he really can't say any more than that. His voice tone to me sounded like OpenSolaris is clearly in the unknown basket and that Oracle haven't decided what to do with it - hence the survey on OpenSolaris.com. Lets hope enough people complete the survey and enter statistics that make OpenSolaris look attractive.
The best thing IMO is to stay positive, stay supportive of OpenSolaris, and remember that Oracle is well resourced but is known for cutting hard when projects aren't working out. If the OpenSolaris community stays healthy and strong I can't see how it would be of any strategic benefit to discontinue an open source version of Solaris, particularly as it lures people into Solaris - providing Oracle with lucrative support, training, and certification revenues. My prediction is we will see an open-sourced version of Solaris continued, perhaps with limited CPU/memory range (like x86 only) with a smooth and marketed push to to get you on Sparc Solaris once you reach a certain size. If OpenSolaris can find a strong place in the Oracle sphere as a product that feeds Solaris Enterprise and looks after the community, then I think it will live strong. Anyway I'll keep you posted as to whether I can successfully purchase email support for $100...Tim. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
