Well I pulled a 4GB card from another x4540 we have and that one worked fine. This is the crux of the problem now: Sun no longer sells CF cards and told us to get a third party card. They were not specific on which brand to get, so we just found one that looked good. But obviously it is somehow incompatible. I'm opening a support case on this, such that they can send me a list of supported cards, or at least give me specs that such a card must adhere to. I guess this is pretty off-topic for this forum already, so let's chalk it up to bad planning and have some more coffee.
