It's worth going for extra cores - especially if you're considering running a large RAIDZ2 array. I began with a Phenom II X2 550 BE and found both cores would be pegged during a scrub of my eight-disk RAIDZ2. When I switched to an Athlon II X4 630, scrubs no longer overwhelmed the CPU.
Then again, I later discovered discovered that my particular Phenom had two unlockable cores - but it's already in a different system now. Of course, unlocking locked cores is risky, but mine seems to be working OK as an unofficial quad-core. I'm not going to go further and try overclocking it - especially since I can't monitor the CPU temperature in OpenSolaris.
