Yes, I was hoping there would be some simple way of mapping UID's between different systems, without having to use a naming service. I found the map_static feature in the man pages for NFS in an older version of Ubuntu (never seen anything about it in Solaris/OpenSolaris).
My current setup uses a DSL router/gateway which dynamically assigns IP addresses, so I haven't needed to set up a DNS server yet. I guess I'll have to set up one of the machines as a DNS server if I want to use LDAP.
