A little update on this issue:

After spending 10 mins. for each of the 14 drives, all drives are finally 
accessible. I was even able to import my zpool that resides on that storage and 
read/write tests on that pool showed no issues.

Alas, having to wait 140 mins. after reboot for the system to come (partially) 
up, doesn't sound too good, I guess. Partially, since the GUI won't start up, 
which I thin is due to the problem with the HAL deamon.

I checked dmesg once more and found some IRQ issues. Maybe these could be teh 
source of this behaviour?
