Hi, I have experienced this behaviour with the bnx2 (Broadcom) onboard network cards of my Dell 610s servers. I then threw it a quad-port Intel 1000e card and the problems went away.
I have though, a MacPro1,1 that also has Intel e1000 onboard ethernet and since I can't reach it any longer after approx. one week, this issue might be more widespread than I thought.
