I'm still running the version of FF that came with osol snv_134 (i.e. v
3.5.8) since it's behaving just fine. However, as a user (I can't speak
for the dev's, etc.) I have no problem that one would have to use pfexec
to run firefox before it would allow you to update, even though your
user has the root 'role'. The default v3.5.8 doesn't even have the
update option enabled, which is fine for me. It just checks for updates
to add-ons. To me that means it's a bit more secure and it's less likely
that some sort of malware can perform an 'auto-update' or run some other
malicious code.
One reason I don't like using the Google Chrome browser is the
auto-update feature. It even created it's own repo on Fedora and enabled
it when I installed the browser. That really annoyed me, so I disabled
the repo as soon as I discovered it, and ultimately removed the browser;
and now I use the chromium browser (or Firefox) when I boot to Fedora,
which only updates through a yum update. I know you weren't talking
about auto-updates, but my train of thought went down that road... my
main point is that using pfexec first makes it a bit more secure and
given the browser exploits and malware out there, every little bit helps!

I installed previously Firefox browser v3.6.7 on my OpenSolaris.
When I (as user "can23" with "roles=root" attribute in file /etc/user_attr)
try to update "as usual" Firefox from Firefox menu help->Check for updates
then Firefox tells me something about:
"...You do not have system permissions required to install it...."
When I start Firefox instead with
pfexec /usr/bin/firefox
then Update works through the menu mentioned above.
Hmm, why is it not possible to update Firefox as user with roles=root ?
