I ran the community edition of nexentastor (3.0.3) off of a USB drive, and it was very slow. The install took 2+ hours, then regular operations took a long time. When I reinstalled to disk, the install took 20min, and the system is much snappier.
But... I only have 2G of RAM, so likely the system swaps occasionally, which would kill a usb drive. I tried to install to a flash drive on a Dell 2850 with 16G of RAM, and the install took 8 hours. The final reboot was taking over 30 minutes.
