Hi,

You might be able to do this with a Sun Ray appliance in kiosk mode. You can
find the appliances used on Ebay, I would go for atleast a SunRay 1G or maybe a
270 if you can find one. This could then be connected over your private
internal
network back to a SunRay server and have the video stream from there.

The other option would be to probably setup OpenSolaris on a PC. You might have
to hack GDM or XDM to make it open up your video app and play the file. But it
should be doable. As for hardware, take a look at the HCL for Solaris and
OpenSolaris. There are plenty of supported configurations and video cards. For
video playback, take a look at the fluendo plug-ins and media player.

Subject: [osol-help] Opensolaris as video "kiosk"

I'm interested in building a small system that will have only one purpose: to
play looping videos in an educational setting (sort of like in a museum).
Assuming I don't have hardware issues, (I know that can be a major hurdle) I'm
wondering about using OpenSolaris for this. This will be on a protected
internal
network, with no Internet access. No local input device - mouse/keyboard. So
what I'd like it to do is:

1. Boot up
2. Automatically log in
3. Launch vlc or whatever app is being used, in full screen mode and play a
specified video
4. Loop that content continuously until interrupted by the administrator who
would control the system via ssh from another machine on the network
5. If power drops or for any other reason it goes down, reboot and start over
without intervention

Does this seem feasible?
