I'm going from memory, but you need to have Xorg create a configuration file and then you need to add the resolutions into it and store it in /etc/X11.

See Xorg(1) and xorg.conf(4)

As root user without the X window system running, execute Xorg -configure to save the standard xorg.conf file which becomes the starting point that you edit.

Again, IIRC, I added these lines to the "Screen" section for my file server with a recycled LCD with a 1280x1024 screen size.

        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Modes "1280x1024"
                Depth 24
        EndSubSection

I found a lot of good information on the web, especially the Xorg site http://www.x.org/wiki/

I'm going to try and use a different build and see if I can get further.
